As an artist myself, I am a big fan of art museums & I always visit them when I travel to a new or different city. Recently I went back to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and it did not disappoint.
Both the permanent and temporary exhibits at the High are excellent. You’ll find modern sculpture in one room, turn the corner and be faced with Impressionist paintings, and stumble upon modern portraiture in the next room.

When I visited, there was a captivating exhibit of photography by Tyler Mitchell, a native to Atlanta. His photographs of his hometown were brimming with emotion, and I really enjoyed this exhibit. You can find current and upcoming exhibit information on the High’s website.

Though the High is on the smaller side of museums compared to the Met or the Louvre, it’s well-designed. The atrium lets in so much light and provides a canvas for colorful murals. As you cross the skyway, you’ll catch glimpses of the city skyline outside. The gardens and courtyards surrounding the museum are beautiful as well and a peaceful place to hang out after you wander through the museum.
If you’re headed to Atlanta soon, I definitely recommend adding the High to your list of activities. It’s a gem!

Until then, these photos of my afternoon at the High can provide a glimpse for you. If you need more art museum inspiration check out my previous post about five small art museums that I love. And, as always, if you have travel tips or suggestions for me, drop me a note!
